Dennis Darling was born in California in 1956, but spent most of his childhood in Bloomingdale, Ohio. As a kid he loved anything on wheels and that has continued into adulthood. Although he is a plumber by trade, he enjoys working on cars and motorcycles, and hopes that at least one of his grandchildren will share this passion.
Dennis was months away from retiring as a plumber with full benefits when he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Since then life has been a series of doctor appointments, chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant, and weeks of quarantine.
This summer, life had started to return to a “new normal”, when a routine follow up exam revealed the devastating news that the cancer returned. A second stem cell transplant is the recommended course of treatment, which is a daunting challenge for the family as they spent their entire life savings on the first transplant.
Although this has been a difficult time, Dennis is trying to stay positive. The time he spent quarantined was time he got to spend with his wife, Mary. Dennis and Mary met after Mary’s husband passed away and she was left a single mother with four kids. Dennis devoted himself to Mary and the kids and is now a loving grandfather of seven.
Mary and the family are now devoting themselves to Dennis’ treatment, and they are working to do whatever they can to help raise funding for the second transplant. They have teamed with The Bone Marrow Foundation to set up a special One-to-One Fund to collect donations on his behalf.
Reflecting upon their experience, the family shares this request: “Please keep Dennis and Mary in your prayers and remember when you think you are having a bad day to be grateful for every good fortune you have. When you have your health you may have many wishes, when you don’t, you only wish for one thing. Please help make Dennis’ one wish come true.”
Or you can send a check, payable to The Bone Marrow Foundation.
Be sure to include Dennis’ name on the front of the check.
