Donald and Margie Ganzer with their children, Austin, Dillon, and Jordan

On December 9, 2009, Donald (Donnie) Ganzer discovered a blood clot in his left leg. He was quickly admitted to the Missouri Baptist Emergency Room for testing. It was determined that Donnie had an enlarged spleen, which is a symptom of chronic myelogenous leukemia. Donnie was later diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia in the chronic phase.
Since that time, Donnie has been required to take multiple medications, undergo weekly shots in his stomach, and weekly physician appointments. These appointments keep track of another serious symptom, chromosome 7, which can turn his leukemia from chronic to acute. There is only a 12% chance of success with the bone marrow transplant once the chromosome 7 is affected, making these crucial measures for Donnie to endure.
Although this has been a disruption to Donnie’s life, he has continued to work full-time as the Assistant Director of Security at ERMC at Mid-Rivers Mall in St. Peters, Missouri. Donnie has also stayed a devoted husband to Margie (his wife of 15 years), father to Austin (age 14), Dillon (age 13), and Jordan (age 10), brother to Johnny and Samantha, uncle to Joshua, brother-in-law to Marty, son to Sam and Linda, and best friend to many.
Donnie is the kind of person that is always willing to give of himself to help anyone that needs assistance. He is the epitome of someone who never meets a stranger. Donnie does not easily ask others for assistance, so this trial in his life is taking many tolls on him and his family.
Donnie and Margie will be heading to Nashville, Tennessee in a few weeks for his bone marrow transplant. Donnie’s treatment will take 100+ days. This stay in Tennessee will be a great hardship to the Ganzer family as they will lose both Donnie and Margie’s income. After the transplant, Donnie will not be able to work for six months to a year, leaving the future of his current position uncertain.
If you have the pleasure of knowing Donnie, you will understand why it is so important to help someone that is always helping others. In order to assist Donnie with post-transplant treatment expenses, his family and friends have teamed with the Bone Marrow & Cancer Foundation to set up a special One-to-One Fund to collect donations on his behalf. Any assistance and support will be greatly appreciated.
