John Ciempa

John Ciempa was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) in April of 2010. Since that time, he has undergone multiple rounds of chemotherapy, several blood transfusions, and a bone marrow transplant.
Due to the lengthy course of treatment for his MDS, John could not return to work and was terminated by his employer. This has created a very difficult financial situation for him and his wife, Debra. John lost his health coverage and was left with either making COBRA payments of $1,641 a month or going without insurance. Debra also had to stop working in order to be John’s required caregiver, costing them the loss of her income as well.
John and Debra needed to temporary relocate within 15 minutes of Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, which has caused a substantial increase in expenses. John and his wife are now responsible for an additional $3,000 for rent in Tampa, as well as their regular expenses back home.
Although this has been an extremely challenging time, John has been doing his best to remain upbeat and positive. He is focusing on celebrating his 35th wedding anniversary in October with Debra and their two children.
To help reduce the financial burden that John and Debra are faced with, they have decided to team with the Bone Marrow & Cancer Foundation to set up a One-to-One Fund. They are extremely appreciative of any assistance towards their mounting medical and living expenses.
