My Stem Cell Transplant Journey

Hi,

Update: I’m officially cancer free and 100% down ourselves as of this past January. I feel so blessed and lucky to have a great partner, amazing community, excellent family members, and an extraordinary insurance that covered everything but $2000 not including the 30,000 we had to spend in relocation cost.

I was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer, essential thrombocythemia, at age 28 while living in San Francisco. In 2016, it progressed into myelofibrosis. For nine long years, I waited—sometimes patiently, sometimes not—for the possibility of a stem cell transplant.

In October 2025, that wish finally came true.

My husband and I temporarily relocated to Arizona in September so I could undergo my transplant at the Mayo Clinic. I received my stem cell transplant on October 31st.

While I’m deeply grateful for this life-saving opportunity, the road hasn’t been easy. I experienced serious chemotherapy complications that required intubation and a medically induced coma for two weeks. As a result, I lost significant muscle mass and had to relearn how to walk and rebuild my strength. I’m also currently dealing with a very large blood clot in my leg.

Despite everything, I don’t regret my decision for a moment. The Mayo Clinic has been incredible, and although losing my hair and—at times—my independence has been challenging, I’m still here. And for that, I’m incredibly grateful.

That said, the financial reality has been heavy. Between medical bills, extended housing costs, and day-to-day expenses while recovering far from home, the costs add up quickly.

If you’re able to donate, I would be deeply appreciative. And if it turns out that I don’t need all of the funds raised, any remaining balance will be donated to help other patients facing the same cancers I am fighting now.

Thank you so much for reading, sharing, and supporting in any way.

With love and gratitude,

Angie 🤍
