Dee Birch

My name is Demetra Birch and I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma on my birthday July 12, 2016. I am a mother of three beautiful and magnificent children and have been blessed to say the least. I have worked in the healthcare industry since I was 16 years old and until 2 weeks ago that has come to almost a complete hault. My last bone marrow biopsy in June/2024 showed that the Myeloma cells in my body have progressed to 70% and my oncologist has started me on a very aggressive chemotherapy treatment. Going for abdominal injections several times a week in the chemo treatment center has not only taking time from my work, but has left me with little motivation to barely leave my residence. Currently, I am working with a nurse navigator who has been so helpful with researching any financial aid that is out there. I’ve always had atleast two jobs at once to be able to afford my childrens’ needs, as well as my own. But now, I feel guilty accepting the gas cards that are offered to us after treatment because I still think that there are others that are in more need than I. It has just recently become my realization that I am now the one in need.
