For 27 years, I’ve been fighting cancer.
I was first diagnosed at 29, just after completing my Master’s in Creative Writing, while grieving my father’s death, navigating a divorce, and raising two young children. Since then, cancer has returned multiple times:
- Bilateral mastectomy and chemotherapy
- Full hysterectomy and radiation
- Recurrence in my left breast requiring more treatment
- A decade cancer-free
- At 50, during COVID, metastasis to my left lung –
- Recurrence again months later
- Now metastasis to my bones
Through it all, I’ve earned a second Master’s in School Leadership, taught at the college level, built my own business, mentored youth, helped students travel abroad, and raised my nieces when their parents could not. I have never been lazy—I’ve worked my entire life.
But this current battle is different. Treatments have made me extremely ill. I am relearning how to walk. My doctors have paused treatment so my body can heal before entering a clinical trial in Houston. Right now, I’m managing severe side effects and waiting to regain enough strength to continue.
Cancer has disrupted my work, my business, and my financial stability. It has brought physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual hardship.
Today, I am asking for help.
If you know me, or have been impacted by my work as an educator, mentor, leader, or community advocate, please consider:
- Sharing this message
- Offering prayer
- Providing financial support if you are able
- Connecting me with sororities, churches, alumni groups, or organizations that can help
I have written a book available for purchase and can host virtual talks or speaking engagements as my strength allows. Every act of support matters.
Thank you for standing with me in this season.
With faith and determination,
Keisha Miles
