On December 16, 2022 Chris was diagnosed with Vexas syndrome. He had seen several doctors prior to this and was struggling with what he was told to be auto-immune disorder over the past nine years. Vexas syndrome is a rare disease and it will require that Chris have a bone marrow transplant. Chris's sister Kelly is a match and will be his bone marrow donor. He is scheduled for his surgery April 21, 2023.
Chris will receive chemotherapy prior to his procedure and will be admitted to the Oregon Health & Science University hospital in Portland, where he will remain a month after his surgery. Unable to work during his recovery, which is expected to be 6 months to a year, and with no income, Chris is concerned he will not be able to pay all his expenses or afford to keep his home. He will need 24 hour care upon his release from the hospital for at least 3 months. There is a 20% chance Chris doesn't make it.
Chris has a cat named Chloe and a dog Waylon. They will need some caretaking too.
