For months our mother (Perri) had been telling the doctor she wasn't feeling like herself. She complained of bones that ached when she got too cold, bruises that were appearing out of no where, and being extemely tired all of the time. Her Internal Medicine doctor at the time had labs drawn, and told her that she was severly anemic, and that her white blood cell count was only at a 2. The doctor provided a prescription for antibotics and told our mother to return in a month. July 7, 2022 our mother went back in and had labs drawn again, and she complained of feeling more tired than before and this achy feeling in her leg. Our mother asked the doctor if it could be a blood clot, and was told that the doctor herself did not think so. The doctor sent our mother for a sonogram of her leg to double check rather or not it was a blood clot. On Friday, July 8, 2022 the doctor informed our mother that her white blood cell count was at 2.7, and that the sonogram that she had done came back negative for any blood clots. Saturday, July 9, 2022 our mother woke up unable to walk and experiencing excruciating pain in the same leg she had checked. She called her doctor's on call line, and when he doctor called back and our mother explained what she was feeling the doctors response took us all by surprise. The doctor told our mother that her sonogram on her leg showed that there was no blood clot, and that maybe what she was feeling was all in her head and she may need some anxiety meds. As her daughters we spoke up and let the doctor know that her response was unethical and could confirm the pain that our mother was in because we were with her. Monday, July 11, 2022 our mother woke up unable to move, losing her bodily functions, and my oldest daughter rushed her to the ER. What we found out next was very bewildering. In the ER it was determined that our mother did in fact have a blood clot, that the blood clot had been there for a while and that was evident due to the way it appeared on the screen. It was not only a blood clot, but a deep vain thrombosis. She was admitted to the hospital for further testing, and it was determined that the blood clot had been there so long that it had started causing an infection called cellulitis. The next day more tests were ran, and a neurologist was consulted due to headaches my mother also had been reporting along with weakness on the left side of her body. After the neurology consult we found out our mother showed signs of having a mini stroke within the last 2 weeks, and furhter testing showed blockage in her carotid artery. As the days progressed our mother became sicker, and doctors ran some many tests to see what the cause could be. On Wednesday, July 20, 2022 attending physician along with Hematology conducted a Bone Marrow Biopsy on our mother. Saturday, July 23, 2022 at 7:00am we received the call that would change our lives and the way we viewed life. On, Saturday, July 23, 2022 we were told that our mother had Myeloidsplastic Syndrome and Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Our mother was immediately transferred to Baylor T Boone Pickens Cancer Hospital. Once we arrived at the hospital they got our mother set up and comfortable, but for some reason they could not get her body temperature to come up. Our mother was moved to ICU and we were told she was sepsis and in a critical state. For the first few weeks our mother had to fight an infection that was brought on by the DVT in her right leg that went untreated due to her Dr's failure to listen to her patient. While our mother fought the Oncologist waited for the final results of her Bone Marrow Biopsy to see what mutation she had so they would know how to treat her. Once final testing was received, the Oncologist were very skeptical on rather or not they would be able to help our mother get a cure. The mutation she has is one that makes it difficult for an individual to be pur into remission. Our mother has several other health issues, and that made it difficult to treat her aggressively. The Oncology Team put her on a general chemo and monitored her progress. Our mother was bed ridden and weak, but responding to chemo well. After a chemo treatment and being released from the hospital after two month and having to be readmitted two weeks later for fluid retention. While back in the hospital our mother learned that her second bone marrow biopsy showed that she was in remission. We were so overjoyed and excited about what that meant for her. We began to consult with a Bone Marrow Transplant doctor about an Allogenic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation (HCT) Transplant. Various tests were ran, and a donor had to be found. My sister and I were tested and found to be a match. During the HLA Typing it was also determined that our mother did not have any antibodies built up against me. So, Game Time; right? Well, unfortunately while testing and preparing for this transplant a third bone marrow biopsy showed that our mother was no longer in remission. Our mother was readmitted into the hospital on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 to receive an aggressive form of chemo. Since her new admission she has suffered from a heart attack, but is doing well. Her Oncologist has informed us she is still on track for transplant, and we are currently awaiting a follow up Bone Marrow Biopsy to see if she is back in remission so we can proceed forward with the transplant.
