After hitting significant milestones in her educational career, Keisha Miles was diagnosed with Stage IV Breast Cancer at just 29. Amid this challenging period, she managed to raise her young children, navigate a divorce, and cope with the loss of her father to pancreatic cancer—all while completing her first Master of Arts in Creative Writing. Even during her second recurrence of Stage IV Breast Cancer, Keisha remained undeterred in her pursuit of excellence. She went back to graduate school and earned a Master of Science in Education of School Administration.
Unfortunately, her breast cancer returned three times from ages 30 to 40. After enduring multiple surgeries and treatments, Keisha went into remission for ten years. Tragically, from ages 50 to 53, the cancer metastasized to her lung three times, and by age 54, it had spread to her bones. She is now trying a combination of integrative medicine with traditional treatment.
During her 25-year battle with cancer and its seven recurrences, Prof. Keisha Rosina Miles took on additional responsibilities of raising her nieces who were 4 and 6 years old at the time due to unforeseen family circumstances. Both parents of her nieces were incarcerated for over 15 years, leaving Keisha to care for them from a very young age. Her lifetime goal and passion are advocating for the safety of children and empowering their gifts and talents. Keisha used her love and educational gifts to ensure her nieces received intense intervention with therapy, involvement in their church community, and participation in various activities like choir, ballet, robotics and coding. Her efforts led both nieces to receive full academic scholarships for college, with the oldest niece graduating with a degree in STEAM from SUNY Binghamton; presently received a full scholarship into Medical School so becoming an anesthesiologist; the youngest pursuing a degree in business while producing and writing music.
Throughout her journey, Keisha continued to advance her career in education and advocate for marginalized women facing cancer. She also created a Wellness Educational Platform through film, playwriting, motivational speaking, wellness workshops, and authoring a thought-provoking book, “Silent Corner: The Journey of Strength.” Keisha’s health forced her to defer JD/ Doctoral degree that was planned after children went off to college.
Keisha's efforts have helped many students flourish academically and personally. She has seen her children and nieces achieve significant academic success, including full scholarships to prestigious universities. Now, facing more cancer treatment and unable to work, Keisha is financially stressed. She is grateful for the support from her family, friends, and the Bone Marrow & Cancer Foundation, which has set up a Careline’s Fund to help manage her medical and living expenses. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Oar_S3eXZF4nCa9cbde6cn2WiDv5h2vl/view?usp=sharing_eil_m&ts=66993b11
