Lynda Sanders is a loving and active grandmother, who has worked as a church secretary for 20 years. She has also been involved in providing foster care for rat terriers that have been abandoned and/or abused.
Unfortunately, Lynda’s ability to work came to a halt in late summer of 2010, when she began to experience severe chest and back pain. After numerous trips to doctors and specialists, she received a diagnosis of multiple myeloma.
Her oncologist began chemotherapy immediately and also advised her to consult with a bone marrow transplant facility to see if she was a candidate for a transplant. The closest transplant facility to Lynda’s home was 250 miles away in Atlanta. After being determined a candidate, Lynda temporarily relocated to Atlanta in order to receive an autologous stem cell transplant in early 2011. During her recovery Lynda stayed at the Hope Lodge in Atlanta and was cared for by her sister and her son.
The expense of the transplant caused Lynda’s health insurance to reach its lifetime cap, leaving her without insurance for the past six months. Lynda and her husband are on a fixed income, but her medical bills continue to stack up and cause financial problems. There are numerous medications she must take on a daily basis. Lynda also has chronic back pain due to several collapsed vertebrae from damage caused by the multiple myeloma. In order to manage her symptoms Lynda must take pain medication as well as undergo biweekly chemotherapy treatments to keep the myeloma in check.
Lynda is doing the best she can to manage her medical expenses, but the financial burden is starting to take its toll. In order to help Lynda with these expenses, she and her family have turned to the Bone Marrow & Cancer Foundation to set up a One-to-One Fund to collect donations on her behalf.
