Maria is a 75-year-“young” remarkable woman who is fighting cancer for the second time in her life. In 2010, Maria was diagnosed with breast cancer. With the help of wonderful doctors and strong family support, she had been cancer-free for the last three years. In June 2014, Maria began feeling very weak. She went to the hospital where she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
Because of Maria’s strong will and overall good health, doctors determined that she would be a candidate for a bone marrow transplant, despite her older age. A match was found in her younger brother and she is due for a transplant in early October 2014.
With the increased costs of co-pays for medications and her monthly utilities, taxes, and transportation expenses to the clinic, etc., her fixed social security pension is stretched very thin.
Maria and her family are partnering with the Bone Marrow & Cancer Foundation during this difficult time in order to help her raise funds towards her treatment expenses.
