Dennis Cress

Dennis CressIn August of 2004, Dennis Cress received a shocking call from his doctor’s office. Routine blood tests showed abnormalities that could be cancer-related. Dennis was referred to a hematology/oncology specialist for further study. After a bone marrow biopsy, he was diagnosed with the beginning stages of multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells in the bone marrow. There is no permanent cure for multiple myeloma, but treatment can help control symptoms and manage complications.
This was shattering news for the then 53 year old grandfather. Dennis was independent, preparing for retirement, and ready to celebrate a new phase of life. Suddenly, he found himself faced with fighting a chronic illness. He was placed on a watch care program by his local oncologist and visited the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago for regular testing and follow-up care.
For many years, the disease remained relatively stable, but in January of 2012, it became necessary to pursue further treatment. Dennis began 12 weeks of chemotherapy in preparation for an autologous Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation (HCT) transplant. He received the transplant at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in May of 2012 and now faces months of recovery.
Dennis is currently at home with his faithful dog “Gunner,” who brings energy and much needed love and companionship. Unfortunately, Dennis is feeling pressured to find supplemental funding to cope with the costs not covered by his medical insurance. In order to help with these expenses, his family has teamed with the Bone Marrow & Cancer Foundation to create a One-to-One Fund to collect donations on his behalf. Dennis and his family are incredibly grateful for any contributions, prayers, and continued support.
