Caroline Cooper
Caroline enjoys being surrounded by people and is described by loved ones as extremely loving and outgoing. She is a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was married for 32 years and unfortunately lost her husband when he was 49 years old. Caroline has worked a variety of jobs, from her family-run construction company to a family-run doughnut shop to a mammography center. Whatever job she had, her favorite part was working with people.
In the spring of 2014, at the age of 68, Caroline found herself becoming weak, pale, and sweating profusely. Although she had previously been very active, she was forced to start walking with a cane. A blood specialist diagnosed her with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in June 2014. Within 48 hours, her daughter and caregiver Deborah brought Caroline to a hospital three hours from her home to be treated.
Caroline is currently undergoing intensive chemo and awaiting a match for a bone marrow transplant. Although her siblings wanted to donate their bone marrow to Caroline, they exceed the donor age limit and therefore Caroline will need a donor located by the national bone marrow registry. Her transplant will hopefully take place within the next two months.
On top of all these challenges, Caroline recently found out that her insurance considers her treatment center out-of network. She is therefore responsible for more medical expenses than she had originally thought. Because of the many pressing medical expenses Caroline faces, she and her family have decided to team up with the Bone Marrow & Cancer Foundation to open this One-to-One Fund on her behalf. Tax-deductible donations made on Caroline’s behalf will go towards paying for her bone marrow transplant, as well as helping her family with caregiving expenses, gas and accommodations.
