Lawrence Smith

For four years, 33 year old Lawrence (Larry) Smith has been ill with symptoms that range from low red blood and platelet counts, joint and bone pain, inflammation, and fatigue. After several bone marrow biopsies, he was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. In September 2011, his life changed even further after doctors did another bone marrow biopsy and found that he had chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML), a rare blood cancer.
Larry’s only hope for a cure is a bone marrow transplant. His sister is not a donor match, but two potential matches have been found in the National Marrow Donor Registry. Since the diagnosis, Larry has been receiving treatment from the University of Massachusetts. He is currently receiving blood transfusions and chemotherapy treatment in preparation for his transplant.
Larry is single and worked in the automotive industry. He enjoys comedy shows and spending time with family and friends. His mother, sister, brother-in-law, and four nieces are determined that he will win this fight.
The weeks following the transplant will be the hardest. Larry will require 24 hour care and will need to relocate to be close to the hospital. During his recovery, Larry will face the costs of both the transplant and necessary follow-up care, which are extremely expensive. Unfortunately, Larry has not been able to work since he was diagnosed. In order to help pay for his transplant and post-transplant expenses, Larry’s family has teamed with the Bone Marrow & Cancer Foundation to create a special One-to-One Fund to collect donations on his behalf.
