In the summer of 2012, Rudy was working as a union sheet metal worker. During a department store renovation, Rudy felt extremely thirsty and worn out because there was insufficient ventilation and it was very hot. Rudy thought these were signs of heat exhaustion. He even felt so tired that just walking to his car from the job site became tiring. Having always been healthy and strong, Rudy could not imagine what was wrong. He eventually began wondering if his boots were to blame for wearing him out.
While getting a physical, Rudy was told that if he didn’t get to the hospital, he would die soon. Once he got to the emergency room, Rudy was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). He stayed in the hospital for a month and a half receiving chemotherapy and other treatments.
Almost two years after receiving his bone marrow transplant, Rudy is still out of commission and fighting to regain his health. Because of his weakened immune system, he remains physically weak and unable to even carry groceries to his apartment. A loving father and man of faith, Rudy’s spirit remains strong and he refuses to become bitter or hopeless.
In order to help offset the costs associated with his transplant, Rudy has decided to partner with the Bone Marrow & Cancer Foundation to set up a One-to-One Fund to collect donations on his behalf. These funds will assist with necessities such as hospital visits and bills, medicine, and living expenses.
