Jessie Turner has been fighting cancer and its complications for over 20 years. In 1994, while recovering from ovary removal surgery, Ms. Turner noticed a lump under her left arm. After a few doctors’ visits, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The lymphoma had affected her spleen so she needed to get it removed. In 2005, she received chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma as well.
After these bouts with cancer, Ms. Turner was diagnosed with multiple myeloma on December 2, 2013. On August 5, 2014, she underwent an autologous Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation (HCT) transplant. After transplant, Ms. Turner suffered from two infections that required hospitalizations. Tests recently revealed that she is still not cancer-free, so she is scheduled for further chemotherapy and may need to undergo another Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation (HCT) transplant. Ms. Turner continues to keep a positive outlook in spite of the enduring pain from illness related symptoms, medications, and the chemotherapy she has received.
An educator for over 20 years, Ms. Turner had to relinquish her duties from the vocation she loved as a result of complications from this variety of illnesses. Despite numerous ailments, her attempts to acquire disability funding have yet to yield results. Ms. Turner has been fortunate to have medical insurance coverage; however, there are a number of expensive medications and additional expenses continue to mount with covering the costs of co-pays, transfusions, caregiver expenses and transportation.
In order to assist with these mounting expenses, Ms. Turner has decided to team up with the Bone Marrow & Cancer Foundation. Any assistance that is provided would be greatly appreciated.
